 A NOTE FROM SPOKEN

 Reflecting on 2020

With 2020 coming to a close, we stop to reflect – as we have so often this year – on the substantial impact the pandemic had and continues to have on our world. The disruption of normal life, the fear of the disease, and the death of loved ones caused by COVID-19 will stay with us always. Yet, in all that uncertainty and pain, our call remained the same – to share the Word of God and to do so with hopes of transformative change.

In 2020, the Spoken team was blessed beyond measure, to not only continue our ministry, but to innovate new ways to reach the unreached. Through the Holy Spirit, our teams were led to develop creative solutions to continue our work, even when travel restrictions prevented us from meeting in person and when social distancing was mandatory in so many local communities. We praise God for His grace and His wisdom in navigating us through the uncertainties of this year!

Yet, none of our work has been possible without you – the advocates of Spoken who are as devoted to our mission as we are. We are grateful for your continued support, both in prayer and donations, as they energize and enable our team to accomplish so much.

As we march into 2021, we seek to apply all that we learned from this year, knowing our creativity in reaching oral communities is provided by our generous Father, and therefore is never limited. Along with your continued support, together we can rise above the challenges of this world to continue fulfilling the Great Commission.

At Spoken Worldwide, our mission is to reach and empower local leaders around the world to deliver Truth where written words can’t go. As Christians, Jesus has commanded us to share the Gospel and make disciples. We could not possibly accomplish this task on our own, but by His authority and with His strength, we are able to advance into the unreached areas of the world so that ALL may hear.

Currently, the Pastor Development Team is working in eight countries and 35 languages programs with three new added this year. Many projects are in cycle three of the program, meaning first and second-generation leaders are now training third-generation leaders with the original material produced.

Coaching Program

This fall, our Coaching Team has been working on several Orality training projects across Northern Africa alongside our ministry partners. These new training projects aim to create Biblical stories in multiple local languages — reaching oral communities throughout the area.

OBT Program

In the last three months, the OBT Team has initiated a project among the Polchi community in Nigeria. With the help of local leaders, this project will provide translated oral Bible passages that promise to leave a lasting impact in the community. In addition, two more have launched – one with the Wulane in Ethiopia and one with Intha people in Myanmar – with one more teed up for launch soon.

2021 MINISTRY GOALS

Deepen Coaching Program relationships with current ministry partners while establishing new partnerships.

Initiate new OBT Program projects and increase more staff in the coming year.

PDP aims to train new leaders, produce new audio stories, and continue to equip local leaders in the hope they will have a thriving church and spiritual growth.

FIELD MINISTRY TESTIMONIES

Najlaa, a housewife, helped with an Oral Bible Translation community review check and was presented with the story of Joseph for feedback. She listened to the Bible story for more than half an hour and said she enjoyed listening to the audio story because it was easy to follow and understand. She noted that she gets stuck with some difficult concepts and expressions when she reads the Bible, making her lose interest in reading. But with the oral translation of Bible stories into her heart language, she can easily listen and comprehend with no barriers!

Fatima, a believer from North Africa, has never had any academic education. She can read some in her national language, classical Arabic, and usually listens to the radio broadcasted in this same language. When she was introduced to the audio Bible story of Joseph in her heart language, a North African dialect of Arabic, she was thrilled and said, “Now I don’t need anyone to explain the Bible to me! I can now listen and understand it fully on my own!”

TRANSFORMATION STORY: NIGERIA

Simeon Shares the Gospel

Simeon Gideon is a 3rd generation disciple from one of our language programs in Nigeria. Simeon shares a testimony of two men from his community giving their lives to Jesus Christ after hearing the story of David and Goliath.

“One day after church service, I invited two local men to join my listening group, which is part of our weekly church activities. I had been longing to reach out to these neighbors, but I don’t know how to read and communicate the gospel very well in their heart language, Hausa.

So, I invited them over to join our group – using the audio Bible stories on a MegaVoice player, in the Hausa language. I shared the same story that transformed my life — the story of David and Goliath. Two days later, they came to me after farming for the day and asked to listen to the story again about “the big pagan man and the small boy.” They learned from David’s life – how the Lord gave him strength and had a plan for him.

After hearing the stories, the two men decided to turn from their traditional beliefs and practices and gave their lives to Christ Jesus. They said, “We’ve never had a good farming season like this, since we started listening to Bible stories. It’s important to let others know that they can also hear God’s word after farming while relaxing. It will be good if you can take the story to others to hear this life-changing story about how the small boy defeated the big pagan man in the name and power of God of Heaven’s Armies.”

A WORD FROM ED

15 years of dedication. 15 years of sharing Truth.15 years. That’s how long the Spoken Worldwide organization has been sharing God’s Word with oral communities in unreached regions of the world.

Over these years, millions of miles have been flown by US staff, to develop local leaders and ultimately, to inspire 10s of thousands to become disciples. The impact and transformation of lives is mostly unknown to us on this earth, but intimately known by our omniscient God.

This year, with all its challenges, should have been difficult – but by God’s grace, it was easier than we expected and with fewer challenges than what we experienced in 2019. God is faithful indeed. And while we’re not surprised by His faithfulness, our praise and thankfulness for Him is no less passionate. In our highest highs and our lowest lows, God is the same … yesterday, today and forever.

Let’s continue our journey together of faithfulness to the one who knows us and loves us and is forever faithful to us. Because He deserves our worship, our praise and our commitment.

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. Isaiah 9: 6b-7a

With much love and appreciation.

“A changed world begins with us … and a changed us begins when we pray.”

– Eugene Peterson

We often take it for granted, but prayer is powerful and always accessible. Deciding to stop and pray for ourselves or others immediately reminds us that there is more going on than what we see. It is the simplest and most powerful way for us to recognize that God is real and at work in the world.
