Why spoken, rather than
written words?

2/3 of the world’s population learns through spoken, not written, words.

Oral communities rely primarily on spoken means of communication, preferring to pass along knowledge and traditions from one generation to the next through verbal communication such as stories, songs, poems, and dramas – this is their preferred learning style. Yet most Christian discipleship resources have been produced for literate learners, informed by a Western cultural worldview.

If you and nine of your friends made up the world’s population, about seven of you would be oral learners.

Additionally, 3 of the 7 would:

Live in extreme poverty

On average, you and your family would make less than $1.25 a day.

Live under some form of oppression

Caught in human trafficking, religious persecution or corrupt government.

Lack basic
medical aid

If you get sick, doctors and medical facilities are too expensive or too far away.

Have no access to the gospel

You haven’t heard of the Bible or God’s redemption through Jesus.

These are the people to which we are called to minister. They are an underserved population within the unreached people groups of the world and are in desperate need of Truth, not only in their heart language, but also in a style that is engaging and understandable. Our mission is to help create equal access to God’s Word between those that can’t read and those that can, as both are valued equally in God’s Kingdom.
The term “Orality” describes the methods used to effectively reach Oral Learners with transformative Truth. Orality is the work we do at Spoken and explains how we reach those we serve.

Pray

“A changed world begins with us … and a changed us begins when we pray.” –Eugene Peterson
We often take it for granted, but prayer is powerful and always accessible. Deciding to stop and pray for ourselves or others immediately reminds us that there is more going on than what we see. It is the simplest and most powerful way for us to recognize that God is real and at work in the world.
